Crochet Textured Headband Pattern Update and Button Upgrade

Remember the Textured Earwarmer? Well, I’ve made some modifications and it can now be made as one single flat piece with a button closure.

Stitches used: chainless foundation slip stitch (fslst), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc) & double crochet (dc).

Hook: I

Notes: The middle section will always start with a sc and end with a dc. Each row stacks on the other with a sc working into a dc below and a dc working into a sc below, creating ease and consistent row/stitch height.

To modify the pattern for different sizes, change the number of stitches in the middle to a smaller or larger number, You can work a foundation row to the length you prefer around the head you are working for, but keep the outer slip stitches to 10 on each end, and try to keep it an even number. If you end up with an odd number of stitches, it will still work out textured and won’t make that much difference in the end. But my OCD tendencies want the math to work out a certain way.🙂

There are many charts online for what lengths work best for certain ages. Here’s a link to the one I pinned on my Knit and Crochet Board on Pinterest.

Row 1: Leaving a 6-10″ tail to attach a button. Using the chainless foundation method, work 70 fslst. Turn. 70 stitches.

Row 2: Ch 1. Does not count as a stitch, here and throughout. sl st in the second stitch from the hook, Sl st into the next 9 stitches, working in the back loops only, on all slip stitches here and throughout. *Sc into the next st, dc into the next st and repeat from * until 10 stitches remain. Sl st in the last 10 stitches, working in the back loops only, as previously instructed.

Rows 3-4: Repeat row 2. Work 10 slip stitches, then 50 stitches of alternating the sc, dc across and 10 slip stitches on the last 10 stitches. Turn.

Row 5: Ch 1. Sl st in the second stitch from the hook, sl st into the next 2 stitches, chain 3, skip 3, to create the buttonhole, sl st into the next 4, begin alternating the sc, dc in the next 50 stitches until the last 10, and sl st the remaining stitches as in rows 2-4.

Row 6: Repeat row 2 until you reach the last 10 stitches. sl st into the remaining stitches including the 3 ch stitches. This completes the buttonhole.

Rows 7 – 9: Repeat row 2.

Row 10, Sl st into the first 10 stitches, working in the back loops only. Sc into each stitch across. Do not alternate between dc and sc on this last row. It will create a more finished look that matches the beginning edge of your headband. When you reach the end of the sc, dc alternating stitches, go ahead and sl st into each of the last 10 sl stitches. Fasten Off.

Finish by attaching a button to the opposite end of the buttonhole and weaving in the ends.

Just so you know, this is a little loose on my own head. I do have a large skull though. Just saying. But you can adjust the stitch count to your needs as mentioned above.
